Nursing my tonsillitis with some of this lovely Nescafe ginger bread latte and I’m having a weekend off from working/commissions and watching the Yogscast livestream and playing minecraft instead :)
5,676 words later and I have a completed essay. I really enjoyed writing this one and learning about the work of Magritte and his personal life was an interesting experience. Though a lot of my practical work has been on hold for the duration of writing it therefore thought I would upload some recent (as of the other day) practical work using inks. No computer edits here just the original photographs of the work with the contrast touched up slightly.
Interestingly enough I have deciphered many deeper meanings and reasoning behind this famous work of Magritte. Not only does it focus on the displacement of the female form with her identity and stripping the woman down to her essential components when linked with the uncomforting title Le viol/The rape but it also depicts a commentary towards the attitudes of the male part of society towards women. Nonetheless why does the head have to necessarily be that of a female?
The reason I am posting is that I am currently struggling to find any form of critic for this piece of work in particular. I have found many for Magritte himself and for his other famous works but this painting just seems to lead to dead ends for critics, praise etc
Maybe I’m useless at trawling the internet but I haven’t found any in the countless books I have laid out in front of me.
I’m wondering if any of you have your own criticisms/praises of this work yourself that you could leave it in my ask box?

Not uni work but I haven’t done any personal artwork since before the start of the second year so it felt good having some spare time to work on this.
Just finished watching a film that was recommended to me by Lizzie and is titled ‘Men Don’t Tell’ which is an old film (aired in 1993) based on a real life story and it follows the story of a married man who is beaten by his neurotic wife and is in essence quite a sad, eye opening story. I plan to write a full review tomorrow on my thoughts about it because it ties in very well with the ideas I’m looking at at the moment.
I’m useless at keeping up to date on tumblr but here’s a snap of my work in progress today
Work from the past week, been practicing my character strokes and calligraphy in general for a while now and these are the most recent pieces.
I also have some chinese calligraphy brushes which my granddad passed down to me in his will after he passed away and I hadn’t used them (left them in the case) / didn’t realize what they were until further delving into the art of calligraphy, therefore I will be trying those out as I get further into my work.
Can’t wait to start the new term ;)
Seen as it takes me forever to come to a decision as to what I want to focus on for my projects I have narrowed it down to things I have been passionate about for a long time and things I have been doing over the summer so as to carry it on.
Over the summer I have been producing a mass of logos for companies and clients alike mainly to keep up on my part of the income for the flat (my partner can’t pay it all by himself obviously) Therefore as an artist and with my secret passion for design and long-standing passion for typography I thought it would be fitting, fast and a good source of income. With that I came to the conclusion that because typography is such a wonderful art form in itself (especially when hand drawn) that I will be continuing this for my work this semester.
Dwayne Johnson replied to my motherfucking artwork
If you didn’t know, I am a huge wrestling fan (TNA,WWE), and in fact a HUGE Dwayne Johnson fan. So big of a fan that I have seen all his films, all his wrestling documentaries, all of his matches when he was full time. My old room back at my parents house when I lived there was covered in my drawings of him and posters of him.
and this guy that I adore so much has seen my artwork and this has just completed my life.. (other than mine and Curt’s engagement and having our own place etc but that’s another story)
I am so happy
